Different Kinds of Injuries in Baseball educational video.
Why do baseball injuries happen?

The biggest causes are repetitive movements, overuse, poor technique, inadequate rest, sudden movements, and collisions. Pitchers are particularly vulnerable to overuse injuries because throwing places substantial stress on the shoulder and elbow.

Baseball Injuries & Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine

Baseball injuries are physical problems that happen to baseball players during practices or games. They can result from throwing, batting, running, sliding, or being hit by the ball.

Common baseball injuries include:

  • Shoulder injuries — especially from repeated throwing, such as rotator cuff problems or shoulder inflammation.
  • Elbow injuries — repeated pitching can strain the elbow and, in serious cases, damage ligaments such as the UCL.
  • Muscle strains — commonly affecting the hamstrings, groin, or back.
  • Sprains — injuries to ligaments, often involving the ankle, knee, or wrist.
  • Fractures — broken bones can occur from collisions, falls, or being hit by a ball.
  • Concussions — can happen after being hit in the head or during a collision.
  • Knee injuries — may occur while running, changing direction, or sliding.
  • Hand and wrist injuries — can result from batting, catching, or being hit by a pitch.

  • Injury can affect mood: Being unable to play can lead to frustration, sadness, anxiety, loneliness, or loss of identity.
  • Fear of reinjury: Athletes may worry about getting hurt again, which can affect confidence and performance after returning.
  • Loss of routine and team connection: Rehabilitation can separate players from teammates and normal competition.
  • Performance pressure: Players may feel pressure to return quickly or prove they are still capable.
  • Longer-term effects: Persistent pain, repeated injuries, or lengthy rehabilitation can increase psychological stress.
  • Mental health can also affect recovery: Depression, anxiety, poor sleep, and stress can make rehabilitation and return-to-play more difficult.
